Tatyana Moskalkova at the Znanie.Pervye Marathon: "The Main Principles Are Trust, Fairness, and Humanity"

3 March 2024, 22:47

Tatyana Moskalkova, Human Rights Commissioner in the Russian Federation, spoke at the Znanie.Pervye educational marathon. The flagship event of the Russian Znanie Society is held from March 2 to 6 at the World Youth Festival in Sirius. The lecturer not only talked about the work of human rights defenders but also answered the questions of the youth: what to do if the interests of the state and the individual conflict, how to balance law and justice, what challenges the country faces in the sphere of foreign and domestic policy.

In her speech at the Belgorod Pavilion in Sirius at the Znanie.Pervye marathon, the Human Rights Commissioner in the Russian Federation started with the current topic of human rights protection in the new regions of our country. Tatyana Moskalkova noted that the subjects are successfully integrated into the Russian human rights system, and close contact with human rights ombudsmen in the LPR and DPR helps to quickly solve problems of refugees, prisoners of war, and missing persons.

Young people showed great interest in the topic of human rights. Yulia, a marathon participant from the Perm Region, asked what role youth councils could play in this sphere.

“A human rights defender protects not only rights but also the truth. This is a person who is always ready to stand on the side of the weak. Youth do not like to complain, but they have an acute sense of justice, and therefore youth councils work very effectively. For example, they pointed out to us that in Russia, it is necessary to improve the accessibility of student dormitories and control the rise in tuition fees,” emphasized Tatyana Moskalkova.

The speaker paid special attention to the challenges that Russia faces today. In the sphere of foreign policy, it is the growing strength of neo-Nazism, which must be defeated for the sake of a safe future. The main challenge in domestic policy, according to Tatyana Moskalkova, is indifference, when many decisions are made "for show", without delving into the situation.

“Last year, we managed to cancel 18,000 unfair orders. These are various situations: one was denied recognition of a house as dilapidated, another was unfairly calculated a pension. It should be noted that sometimes the law comes into conflict with notions of fairness. For example, there was a case when an entrepreneur cut down part of a forest so that the residents of his village could reach the neighboring settlement, where there is a paramedic midwife station and other vital facilities. He was held criminally responsible. Residents turned to human rights defenders, and we managed to overturn the decision because the person, out of good intentions, had independently paved a path between villages,” explained Tatyana Moskalkova.

The speaker informed the youth about measures to support various categories of citizens, including young families and participants in the Great Patriotic War, who currently have access to priority employment, education, and medical assistance.

Svetlana, a participant in the marathon from Mari El, asked about the legal principles that Russia adheres to in its relations with other countries.

“The main principles are trust, fairness, and humanity. In any, even the most challenging conditions, it is important not to dehumanize. For example, we interact with Ukrainian colleagues on issues of exchanging prisoners and searching for the missing. We are open to dialogue, despite political disagreements. And our President has repeatedly emphasized that Ukrainian prisoners should be treated humanely because humanity is the essence of the Russian state,” replied Tatyana Moskalkova.

The Multinational Unity Day, which included Tatyana Moskalkova's lecture, is dedicated to cultural dialogue, equality, openness and combating stereotypes.

On March 3, the second day of the Znanie.Pervye educational marathon, the speakers of the Multinational Unity Day included: the editor-in-chief of the RT channel and the Rossiya Segodnya media group Margarita Simonyan, the president of the All-Russian Federation of Fijital Sports, Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics Nikita Nagornyy, the first deputy minister of sports of the Russian Federation Azat Kadyrov, the head of the faction of the All-Russian political party "United Russia" in the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the chairman of the All-Russian public-state organization "Assembly of the Peoples of Russia" Vladimir Vasiliev, Turkish actor Burak Ozcivit, artistic director of the F.I. The first federal education marathon was held in May 2021 and became a symbol of the reboot of the Russian Znanie Society. More than 850 lecturers shared their experience during the marathon.

The Russian Znanie Society traces its history back to the Soviet public organization founded in 1947 on the initiative of representatives of the Soviet intelligentsia as the All-Union Society for the Dissemination of Political and Scientific Knowledge (since 1963 — the All-Union Znanie Society, since 1991— the Znanie of Russia Society). Members of the Society were engaged in popularizing science and lecturing on the achievements of the Soviet economy and industry. In 2016, Znanie of Russia was transformed into the Russian Znanie Society. On April 21, 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the need to restart the Russian Znanie Society on a modern digital platform in his address to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
